Shopify’s recommended product image size

Shopify’s own documentation says 2048 × 2048 pixels looks best for square product images, and that images can be up to 4472 × 4472 (20 megapixels) in JPG, PNG or GIF (see Shopify’s product media documentation). 2048 px is large enough for zoom on a desktop screen and sharp on a phone, without the weight of a full-resolution camera file.

One shape for the whole catalogue

This page makes every photo a 2048 × 2048 square on white, never cropping the product and enlarging small photos to fit, so the collection grid lines up whatever the original shapes were. If a product sits small in a wide photo, crop it tighter first with the bulk image cropper; to put products on a clean background, use the bulk background remover first.

Faster pages

Large images are the usual reason a product page loads slowly. Shopify serves resized copies to shoppers, but the file you upload still sets the quality ceiling and the storage. For lighter files, set the last step of the bulk image editor to WebP, or give a maximum size in KB — and save your settings as a preset for the next batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for Shopify products?
Shopify says 2048 × 2048 pixels looks best for square product images, and accepts images up to 4472 × 4472 (20 megapixels). This page makes every image a 2048 × 2048 square.
Why make all product images square?
Most Shopify themes show products in a grid. When every image has the same shape, the grid lines up and no product looks smaller than its neighbour. Padding on white keeps the whole product in view instead of cropping it.
Will the files be too heavy for my store?
Each image is saved as a JPG at 85% quality, and every row shows its size once done. To go smaller, switch the output to WebP in the last step, or set a maximum size in KB.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser and the photos never leave your computer, so there is no account and no daily limit.
