How to use

  1. Add your AVIF images

Drop a folder onto the box above, or press Select images. Up to 200 at a time; they stay on your machine.

  2. Set the quality

JPG is already chosen at 82% quality. Transparent images are marked, and you choose what goes behind them.

  3. Convert and download

Each image lists its old and new format and size. Take one, or the whole batch as a ZIP.

Why AVIF images need converting

AVIF is the newest common image format, and websites increasingly serve it because it is so small. Save one of those images and you may find it will not open in your photo editor, attach to a form or print. JPG is the format everything accepts, so converting a batch of AVIF files to JPG is the simplest way to use them anywhere.

What changes in the conversion

Your browser decodes each AVIF, and the pixels are written out as a JPG at the quality you set — 82% by default, which looks the same as the original on a screen. AVIF can be transparent and JPG cannot, so transparent areas are filled with white, black or light grey, and the page tells you which images that affects before you convert. Expect the JPGs to be larger than the AVIFs: that is the trade for files that open everywhere.

Going the other way

To make AVIF files rather than read them, the bulk image converter and the bulk image compressor can both write AVIF from JPG, PNG or WebP. This page is the converter opened on JPG; there are also pages for WebP to JPG and iPhone HEIC to JPG.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It makes some of the smallest image files there are — often half the size of a JPG that looks the same — which is why more and more websites serve it. Many apps and upload forms cannot open it yet.
Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?
Because AVIF compresses much better. Converting gives you compatibility, not a smaller file: a JPG at the default 82% quality is usually larger than the AVIF it came from. Lower the quality slider if size matters more than detail.
Does it work in every browser?
Your browser decodes the AVIF itself, so it needs one from 2022 or later — Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+ or Safari 16+. An older browser refuses the file with a message rather than producing something wrong.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The AVIF files are read and saved as JPG in your browser and never leave your computer.
