PNG to WebP: lighter, still transparent

PNG is the usual format for anything with a transparent background, and it is heavy. WebP keeps the transparency and stores the picture in far fewer bytes, which is why it is the format to use for logos, product cut-outs and illustrations on a website. Every current browser shows WebP.

When to keep PNG

Keep PNG for files that must stay pixel-exact or go somewhere other than a web page — some editors, print workflows and upload forms still expect it. To make those smaller without changing the format, use compress PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Is transparency kept?
Yes. WebP can be transparent, so transparent areas stay transparent — logos, icons and cut-out product photos keep their see-through background.
How much smaller will my images be?
For photographs saved as PNG, usually many times smaller. For flat graphics and screenshots the saving is smaller and varies. Every row shows the size before and after, so you see it on your own images.
Is WebP lossless like PNG?
This page writes lossy WebP at the quality you choose — 82% by default, which looks the same on a screen. For pixel-exact graphics, raise the quality to 100% or keep them as PNG and use the PNG compressor.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser; the images never leave your computer. That is why there is no account and no limit on how often you use it.
